The demand for Perstorp’s dendritic polymer polyol Boltorn P500 as an oligomer pre-cursor for UV-curable hardcoats is on the rise in Asia, thanks in part to the low viscosity and high hardness it yields, according to the company. “These two properties—low viscosity and high hardness—are especially important for applications such as plasma displays and flat screens,” said Albert Tan, Perstorp market development manager in Asia. “The low viscosity is vital to allow spray applications but that needs to be balanced with high solids properties to ensure a final coating with good hardness. Boltorn P500 delivers just that.” When acrylated, Boltorn P500 yields low-viscosity, UV-curable acrylates with excellent scratch and chemical resistance, high reactivity and good adhesion and flexibility. These benefits make acrylates from Boltorn P500 ideal for UV-curable hardcoats used on flexible substrates such as polycarboantes, polyesters and polyolefins. Perstorp’s Zibo Site in China Perstorp’s TMP production site in Zibo City is the company’s first production site in China. “We have been serving the Chinese market for over 20 years but having local production in China has enabled us to give our customers here closer partnerships and shorter lead times,” said Mats Olofsson, Perstorp business unit manager for resin intermediates. “We see great potential for further expansion in China and see Site Zibo as an excellent production base for the future.” The strategic location, good infrastructure and access to raw material at Site Zibo, in the Qilu Chemical Industrial Park are important factors, as well as available land for expansion. Long-term plans includ building state-of-the-art plants using the latest technology to maximize efficiency and minimize environmental impact, to produce an expanded range of products. “We hope to report on specific expansion activities in production, sales and distribution support in 2010,” Olofsson added. A joint venture with Shandong Fufeng Perstorp Chemical Co. Ltd. established in 2007, the Site Zibo plant maintains Perstorp’s position as the largest producer of TMP in the country, with a production capacity of 15,000 tons. All of the TMP produced there has also been sole on the Chinese market and the company reported a major increase in demand for the versatile polyol during 2009.
